Short in Sirius vehicle power adapter......?

My car adaptor for my Sirius radio developed a short in it...replacement adaptors cost as much as a complete car kit, once you figure in shipping and handling. My sirius adaptor is 5 volts. Can a generic adaptor that converts from 12 volts to 4.5 or 6 volts work, and if so will it damage my radio.
