When can we expect the electoral voting system to be replaced by a pure popular vote?

The electoral voting system takes the power away from the people and puts it into the hands of people who vote for president against the majority of the people. As we have seen many times in the past, most recently 2000, the electoral vote overruled the popular vote allowing a complete monkey to run our country. Why are we in Iraq? Why is our economy going down the drain? Why are more than half of our country's current problems ones that have popped up within the last 8 years? Because the voting system we use is wrong! If this country is supposed to be run by the people, then give people the ability to choose their leader! I know that this system was created during a time where slavery was still mostly accepted, but like slavery it was a bonehead decision to keep when creating this country. So my question is, when will the people in DC realize this and change the entire voting system to a purely popular vote?
