When did the word emo start to crop up?

Now, I'm not quite sure about this, but there is a bit of difference between what is called "emo" and what is called "goth". The word "emo" is a shortened form of emotional, and "emo" basically originated from a type of rock that had a lot of lyrics that were often confessional and whatnot. It's basically a form of rock. I'm guessing that when this genre of music became more mainstream during the 2000's or so, it eventually developed into a stereotype that came from the people who preferred this "emo" rock (which was filled with a bunch of angst). Therefore, the method of dress for this genre of rock music has now been related with people who are depressed, angsty, etc. Sorry if I'm not good at explaining things.
