URGENT HELP needed with laptop problem....?

Battery icon in tool bar showed down to 6%, laptop plugged into mains, but light into laptop from mains not showing. Was switched on from mains, fuse is fine. Able to switch laptop on, but have switched off now as trying to conserve the little life the battery has left and now using PC. Is there anything else I can do, apart from taking it to a computer shop? Thanks in advance.
